Alexander Helfritz, the Sales and Marketing Director of DT Dobie and Maliha Sheikh, the General Manager Sales for Mercedes, unveiled the 2019 Mercedes Benz AMG G 63 which is a motoring icon all terrain passenger vehicle.
Delivering the key note speech at the function held in the Company’s Lusaka Road showroom Alexander Helfritz said, “This is a particular happy occasion for all of us at DT Dobie because it is one of the events marking the 70th anniversary of our link with Mercedes. Our Company was inaugurated by World War II hero Colonel David Dobie in 1949 with the objective of selling and servicing Mercedes passenger cars and trucks”.
“From the early days the small sales force laid heavy stress on the strength and reliability of Mercedes products. Participation in the 6,000 kilometre EA Safari rallies clearly demonstrated the merit of Mercedes ownership. In 1959 and 1960 the toughest rally in the world was won by the Mercedes 219 and the top two places in 1961 were taken by 220SE models”.
“The robust construction of the passenger cars has been eclipsed by the G 63 which is the latest model in the spectacular history of the G Class which started in 1973 with Daimler deciding to develop an off road vehicle capable of competing and beating existing machines in this class. Series production commenced in 1979 and with assembly being carried out largely by hand which continues to be the case today,” added Alexander Helfritz.
The G wagon was an instant hit with the German police forces, Border Guards and the armies of Australia, Argentina and Switzerland. They were prepared to pay a price only marginally below the cost of the S Class luxury saloon.
Four decades later the shape of the sheet metal shell has barely changed, but underneath the technology features the latest engine, transmission drive train and assistance systems which mark Mercedes Benz as a pacesetter in the motoring industry.
Alexander Helfritz concluded, “The owner of an AMG G 63 drives the successor of the 1993 model which won the 10,000 kilometre Paris to Dakar rally. Drivers and their passengers occupy a luxurious cabin and have the comfort of contoured seats covered in Nappa leather and enjoy using the Burmester surround sound system. The high output air conditioner maintains selected temperatures and the amazing ambient lighting has 64 colours and 10 colour schemes to choose from”.
