I was among a bunch of journos who received an invite from DT Dobie to have lunch and check out the new showroom on Uhuru Highway (next to Toyota). Rarely do I say no to such invites because CARS were involved!

It has been a while since I’ve heard from the dealership so this was a great time to catch up with what the dealer has been up to since they launched the G-Wagon in June.

  • The New Showroom.

The newly built showroom will house the Volkswagen & Mercedes Benz brands and will be managed by the General Sales Manager for Volkswagen, Usha Nagpal. The spot will support the main one on Lusaka Road. The VW Lineup had the Amarok, Caddy Kombi, Polo Vivo, Tiguan and the New Touareg. The Mercedes Benz section had the GLE 63s, the C – Class and the GLE on display.

Some interesting insight I picked up from conversations at the lunch. Department heads at the dealership talked about;

  • 70 years with Mercedes Benz.

2019 has been a milestone for DT Dobie as they mark 70 Years of being Mercedes-Benz dealers, making them the oldest Mercedes-Benz dealers in Africa.

  • CBA Concours D’elegance Car of the Year Award.

VW has successfully managed to please the crowds twice in a row at the annual CBA Concours D’elegance. The Tiguan scooped the award in 2018 then subsequently, the Polo Vivo took the trophy home in this year’s edition.

  • Local assembly of the Tiguan!

The Tiguan joins the list of cars assembled in the country at KVM in Thika. This is alongside the Caddy Kombi and Polo Vivo. DT Dobie says they will put together 3 specs of the Tiguan, the Comfortline, Highline, and All Space. Projected pricing is Kshs. 4.2M, 4.9M and 5.5M respectively.

  • The New Touareg.

German engineering meets luxury in the New Touareg. A 3-litre V6 TFSi petrol engine churning out 335HP and 450nM of Torque is coupled up with an 8-speed Tiptronic transmission and 4Motion (permanent four wheel drive with Torsen differential).

The innovision cockpit in the Touareg is my personal favourite thanks to the 15inch Active Info Display, the 12 inch driver instrument cluster, ambient lighting and head up display. The Touareg’s driver seat is a beautiful place to be (sad reality is people buying this car will probably get a chauffeur).

The panoramic glass sunroof allows natural light into the car. It can also tilt and roll back to let the wind in. You can adjust temperatures with dual zone climate control in the front and back or heated and cooled seats for the front seats.

Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink are intergrated to the massive infotainment system via AppConnect.

Safety features include Anti-Locking Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake Pressure Distribution (EBD), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), Multi Collision Brake System and Anti Spin Regulation (ASR).

Competitors in this segment include the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5, and Mercedes GLE. (Who would you opt for if given a choice?)

Pricing for the luxury spec is at Kshs. 12.75 M. I was hoping to get my hands on a demo model for a test drive but they have already been sold! But you will definitely be the first ones to get a review video once I get a test drive done.
